When a young family visits for the first time, they're reading the place for signals. Is this the right place for my kids? Are there other kids here at all? A playground answers both before anyone says a word — and it keeps answering, every Sunday and every campus tour, for the next twenty years.

It also gets paid for by choice. There's no tax base behind this and no line that reappears in a budget each year — it's a capital campaign, a memorial gift, or tuition from families who could enroll somewhere else. Either way, someone decided this was worth funding. That raises the stakes on what actually goes in. A park board explains a purchase to the public once; you'll be answering to the people who paid for it every week for years.

It should be worth the money that’s given. We design for play value — how much there is to actually do, how many kids can be doing it at once, and enough range that a two-year-old out of the nursery and a fourth grader both find something at their level, because yours will have both on it at the same time. If you say every child is welcome, the playground is one of the places that gets tested. We'll design so it's true: kids who use wheelchairs, kids who need somewhere quieter, kids who aren't ready for the tallest thing yet.
